What kind of results can I expect from Cezanne?

Cezanne Perfect Finish Keratin Smoothing Treatment reduces frizz and delivers smoother, stronger, healthier, more manageable and exquisitely beautiful hair that lasts for months.

Does Cezanne deliver similar results compared to formaldehyde-based keratin smoothing treatments?

Yes. You will get very similar results to previous formaldehyde treatments without the health risks. In some cases, frizz and curl reduction will be less than results achieved by the formaldehyde-based systems.

However, you will also enjoy several distinct advantages over other systems. Hair can be colored on the same day, whether it’s before or after the treatment. Hair will still hold a curl, if desired. You can also go right from the salon to the gym or the pool and can also wash hair, use pins or put hair up in a ponytail directly after the treatment. You’ll leave the salon with beautiful, healthy, manageable hair—no strings attached.

What are the active ingredients?

Cezanne’s proprietary formulation is a combination of ingredients including Sericin, a component of silk. In silk, Sericin acts as cement between fibrous filaments. It acts in a similar way when Cezanne is applied to the hair, bonding to natural keratin and cementing itself between strands of keratin proteins. It also contains keratin and gyoxyloylcarbocysteine. Unlike Carbocysteine systems you may be familiar with, Cezanne doesn’t have the unpleasant smell. Cezanne contains Glycolic Acid, which is a well-known exfoliant and moisturizer for the skin.

The treatment uses a revolutionary low pH system with a similar acidity to lemon juice to open the cuticle and infuse the cortex with a proprietary blend of Sericin, keratin, botanical extracts and vitamins, replacing lost and damaged protein mass. When heat is applied during the flat iron process, the cuticle is closed and the proprietary blend of healthy ingredients is locked into the hair, protecting and smoothing the hair from the inside out.

How long will Cezanne Perfect Finish last?

The Perfect Finish treatment will last 3-5 months on average. Similar to formaldehyde-based keratin smoothing treatments, the amount of time varies by client hair type, texture and maintenance routine.

How long will Cezanne Express last?

The Express treatment will last 4-6 weeks on average. The amount of time varies by client hair type, texture and maintenance.

Head to Toe Sun Protection: Part 1

sun damaged hairWe seem to finally be free of cold Wisconsin winter. Spring has arrived and we’re moving toward sunny summer months, which means it’s time to enlist protective measures to shield us from the sun’s harsh rays. Sun protection doesn’t just apply to skin. We often forget that hair is equally susceptible to harmful UVA and UVB rays. Over-exposure damages the hair cuticle, resulting in dull tresses, dry, brittle, frizzy hair and split ends. Keep your locks summer-lovely and prevent sun damaged hair with these helpful tips:

  1. Rinse hair immediately after exposure to salt water or chlorine – both will dry and damage hair. For extra chlorine and build-up removal, we use Aveda’s Sun Care Hair and Body Cleanser.
  2. Invest in styling products with SPF built in. Many companies now make hair sprays, leave-in conditioners and styling aids with SPF built right into the product. We love Aveda’s Protective Hair Veil or Moroccan Oil’s Glimmer Shine.
  3. Wear a hat. Although SPF products can help, wearing a hat will offer the most complete protection from harmful UV rays and it carries the added bonus of shielding your face from the sun.
  4. Protect your part. Apply a small amount of sunscreen to your scalp directly where hair is parted.
  5. Say no to sun-activated hair lightening sprays, peroxides, lemon juices etc. These will rob moisture from your hair and make it more susceptible to sun damage.

And breathe easy … damaged hair can be repaired. To restore moisture and prevent further damage, follow these guidelines:

  1. Don’t try to tame unruly hair with styling aids alone. Understandably, we reach for gels and mousses to make unruly hair cooperate. Instead, give your hair what it really needs – more moisture. Start with a hydrating salon-quality shampoo and rinse-out conditioner, followed by a stronger leave-in conditioner to continue the moisturizing process. Many of the products we carry fit this bill, but several, such as Aveda’s Sun Care and Color Conserve lines, are specifically formulated for UV protection.
  2. If leave-in conditioner isn’t providing enough repair, consider a hair mask. Much like facial masks, a hair mask revitalizes and replenishes deep within the hair shaft. Leave masks as long as directed, then shampoo and condition as usual. A mask is often a must for preserving color and prepares hair for color throughout the sunnier months. Aveda’s Color Conserve Strengthening Treatment or Daily Color Protectant both provide the replenishing moisture needed.
  3. RZ & Company offers several Keratin Smoothing Treatments to lock in protein and provide deep penetrating moisture to damaged hair. Results last six weeks to five months, depending on the treatment.
  4. Avoid hot styling tools, or at least lower the heat setting. Extra heat forces cuticles to split open – essentially undoing all the work those leave-in conditioners and hair masks have accomplished. Stick with the medium or cool settings on your blow dryer. The same is true for curling irons, flat irons and hot rollers. If hair isn’t holding curl the way it should, or still becomes frizzy after straightening, it’s a clear sign you’re using too much heat.

Still, there is only so much these preventative and corrective measures can accomplish. When all else fails, a haircut to remove damaged ends may be necessary. Our stylists will help you find a fantastic style and the right products that will set you up for healthier hair for summer and for the seasons ahead. RZ & Company Wowed at MMoCA’s 2015 Hair Affair

2015 MMoCA Hair Affair "Balancing Act"
2015 MMoCA Hair Affair "Mys. Blue Bird"

We had a fantastic time at the 2015 MMoCA Hair Affair on Thursday, April 23. This year’s theme was Cirque des Cheveux (Circus of Hair). True to form, stylists created incredible, gravity-defying works of art using hair as the primary medium. These spectacular designs balanced atop models’ heads as they descended the glass staircase in the main entry at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA). Attendees saw tresses that could not be constrained, even by the lion tamer’s whip and voluminous, sweet as sugar, cotton candy-inspired coifs.

Closing the runway were not one, but two high flying showpieces presented by RZ & Company. First, was Mys. Blue Bird. Ardent acrobat and struggling protagonist; Mys. Blue Bird is fleeting – yet timeless. Inspired by Cirque du Soliel’s Mystere, this fowl-mouthed and fowl-bodied piece was designed to encourage sympathy for the emotional quest for flight. Feathers, up to 86 inches long, and marvelous, expertly braided and twisted hair dyed to brilliant color perfection were the focus of the piece. Designed by Meghan and Jenny with costuming by Cindy and Marie, this piece drew gasps of delight from the audience with its impressively intricate details.

Just minutes after Mys. Blue Bird wowed the crowed, Balancing Act appeared and descended the staircase to a glorious uproaring of praise. Created by Renee and Arati this truly impressive feat of gravity defiance merged a menagerie of trained pets (seal and monkey) with a Pierrot twist in a deceptively light, four-tier statuary. Built using papier-mâché, Styrofoam, synthetic strands and human hair, this breathtaking balancing act dramatically closed the show, leaving spectators in awe.

Hair Affair 2015 brought together the talents of stylists at some of Madison’s best and most creative salons. We loved closing the runway and showcasing the incredible talents of our gifted designers. We’ve already begun planning for the 2017 Hair Affair. For photos and more information about the evening’s spectacle of art and imagination, visit this link.

Special thanks to all who attended. Your enthusiasm for our craft and for the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art is most inspiring. Funds raised support MMoCA’s free exhibitions and education programming.IMG_1158

A ‘Do for DAIS

A 'Do for DAISAt RZ & Company, we are incredibly grateful to be a part of the vibrant Madison community. We believe our community role extends beyond the salon doors, into the lives and work of the people and organizations responsible for making Madison and Dane County a fantastic place to not just live, but thrive. Which is why we are proud to partner with Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS), to raise awareness about and funding for the organization’s services. From March 15-21 RZ & Company will participate in A ‘Do for DAIS to help end domestic violence. Purple and violet fun strands will be available for $12 each. Sass up your ‘do with just one or a dozen fun strands and show support the DAIS mission. All proceeds directly benefit DAIS programming.

DAIS has served Dane County as the only emergency domestic violence shelter since 1977. In August 2014, the organization made the switch from a confidential to a public location, opening the doors to a new home at 2102 Fordem Avenue . This move provides more than double the housing capacity from 25 to 56 beds and creates ample space for programming.

DAIS works daily toward achieving the organization’s vision for “A nonviolent community that actively promotes safety, peace, justice and hope.” To this end, a wide array of crisis intervention and community education/prevention programs are offered, including a 24-hour Help Line, programming for children from violent homes, legal advocacy, support groups, emergency safety planning, and the only domestic violence shelter for all of Dane County. Recent reports indicate that this vision is being realized. In 2013 The Children’s Program served 235 children, a 10 percent increase from 2012. More than 8,450 calls were made to the help line, 1,180 of which were made by people who had never before reached out. With the increased resources and capacities of their new home, we trust DAIS’s positive impact on the Madison and Dane County communities will only increase.

Call 608.827.7979 or visit our website to schedule an appointment for your fun strands and help us help DAIS to end domestic violence in Dane County. For more information on A ‘Do for DAIS and DAIS in general, please visit their website as well as their Twitter and Facebook pages.

Together we can end domestic violence in Dane County.

An RZ & Company Guide to Waxing

Bikini vs. Brazilian: Which is more popular among women?

We’ve come to find that the Brazilian method of waxing is more popular among women than the

average bikini line wax. Women say they prefer a Brazilian over a regular bikini line wax because it’s

convenient and boosts confidence. A Brazilian waxing means you won’t have to worry about tiny

hairs peeking out of your bikini when lying poolside. Many women also get bikini waxes for hygienic

purposes all year round.

What is the secret to a pain-free wax?

One thing that many people don’t know is the difference between the types of wax being used, which

plays a large role in the amount of pain you will (or won’t) experience. At RZ & Company we use the

highest quality product available, called Nufree. Here are just a few of the reasons why Nufree is the

most effective hair removal treatment in the world.

• Nufree is NOT A WAX and never sticks to

• Nufree is self-preserving antibacterial/antimicrobial so its safe, clean and germ-free.

• Nufree is completely BOTANICAL and safe for the entire body.

• Nufree doesn’t dry and can be erased any time!

• Nufree is scientifically tested and uses

Satin Smooth, formulated for coarse, stubborn hair, is used for our Men’s Speedo & Brazilian

services. This hard wax is designed for strip-free waxing. A high quality wax is only one piece of the

puzzle. Your service provider also needs a basic understanding of the body in order to properly

remove hair. The professionals at RZ & Company are well trained and sensitive to these issues.

What kind of prep should you do before a wax?

For the best waxing results, hair should be grown to about a quarter of an inch long. This length is

ideal because it allows the wax to get a better grip on the hair and pull it out directly from the root,

rather than the hair just above the skin. Keeping the hair healthy and hydrated all the time, which

entails drinking lots of water, moisturizing to keep the skin soft & exfoliation are all key to successful

waxing. It’s best to avoid exfoliating one to two days before and after getting waxed.

Who shouldn’t have waxing services (i.e. people with sensitive skin)?

Anyone can get waxed as long as the hair is the correct length. Please do let your service provider

know beforehand if you have any allergies, health conditions, or are taking any medications (like

Accutane).

How soon before vacation should you be getting a wax?

For smooth skin throughout your vacation, we recommend a waxing service two to three days prior

to vacation for the best results. If you are new to waxing or do not wax regularly, we recommend

scheduling a waxing service at least 4 weeks prior to your vacation, then again for maintenance two-

three days prior. In the event of sensitivity or a reaction to waxing, this ensures it does not interfere

with your vacation.

How often should I come in to maintain my bikini wax?

We recommend about 4 weeks between waxing services to maintain your silky smoothness!
