RZ & Company Wowed at MMoCA’s 2015 Hair Affair

2015 MMoCA Hair Affair "Balancing Act"
2015 MMoCA Hair Affair "Mys. Blue Bird"

We had a fantastic time at the 2015 MMoCA Hair Affair on Thursday, April 23. This year’s theme was Cirque des Cheveux (Circus of Hair). True to form, stylists created incredible, gravity-defying works of art using hair as the primary medium. These spectacular designs balanced atop models’ heads as they descended the glass staircase in the main entry at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA). Attendees saw tresses that could not be constrained, even by the lion tamer’s whip and voluminous, sweet as sugar, cotton candy-inspired coifs.

Closing the runway were not one, but two high flying showpieces presented by RZ & Company. First, was Mys. Blue Bird. Ardent acrobat and struggling protagonist; Mys. Blue Bird is fleeting – yet timeless. Inspired by Cirque du Soliel’s Mystere, this fowl-mouthed and fowl-bodied piece was designed to encourage sympathy for the emotional quest for flight. Feathers, up to 86 inches long, and marvelous, expertly braided and twisted hair dyed to brilliant color perfection were the focus of the piece. Designed by Meghan and Jenny with costuming by Cindy and Marie, this piece drew gasps of delight from the audience with its impressively intricate details.

Just minutes after Mys. Blue Bird wowed the crowed, Balancing Act appeared and descended the staircase to a glorious uproaring of praise. Created by Renee and Arati this truly impressive feat of gravity defiance merged a menagerie of trained pets (seal and monkey) with a Pierrot twist in a deceptively light, four-tier statuary. Built using papier-mâché, Styrofoam, synthetic strands and human hair, this breathtaking balancing act dramatically closed the show, leaving spectators in awe.

Hair Affair 2015 brought together the talents of stylists at some of Madison’s best and most creative salons. We loved closing the runway and showcasing the incredible talents of our gifted designers. We’ve already begun planning for the 2017 Hair Affair.
